The Seekers song “The Carnival Is Over” was presented on this day as Dave stepped in to substitute for Sev. You can read the clue as well as the reason for the substitution below…
Standing in for Sev, as he, Kat and family today face the heartbreaking task of laying their son-in-law to rest in Arlington Cemetery. ((((Sev & Kat)))), you are in our thoughts today… Rest In Peace Tony.
The song I have chosen for you today is a poignant love song from one of Australias best known 60s groups, a group of folk-influenced popular musicians that was formed in Melbourne in 1962. They were the first Australian popular music group to achieve major chart and sales success in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Today’s song is a pop-folk song written by Tom Springfield in 1965 for this band, and they close their concerts with the song. At its peak, the song was selling 93,000 copies per day and is No 30 of the biggest selling singles of all time in the United Kingdom. In the USA though it didn’t fare so well, failing to hit the Billboard Top 100, peaking at #105.
This song in its version by todays artists, has also become a tradition to close some of the special events within Australia.
The tune is taken from a Russian folk song “Stenka Razin”. The song became popular in Russia as early as 1890s. It was performed by the Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra (balalaikas and domras) during their 1967 tour of Australia. The tune is also used in a Dutch hymn “Vol Verwachting Blijf Ik Uitzien”.
Now the harbour light is calling, this will be our last goodbye
Incredibly this group has never been featured on Mystery Lyrics.

The seekers….the carnival is over…..and I remember their hit here, I Know There’ll Never Be Another You, or as they sing in Tennessee, Ewe. A dopey joke, I know, but I need something to make me smile on this sad day for my friends.

Also sending a prayer along for “Sev” and his family.
Hello, Dave:
Condolences to Sev & Kat. RIP, Tony.
The song is The Carnival Is Over and the artists are The Seekers.
{{{{{{{{{{{Dave}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Nice Phil in for Sev and your right our prayers are with his family. It’s The Carnival Is Over by The Seekers, I hope that this isn’t too late, it’s been a very busy week. Thursday’s are usually one of the busiest for me, along with Modays……. sheesh only 11 or so years til retirement.
Say goodbye my own true lover
As we sing a lovers song
How it breaks my heart to leave you
Now the carnival is gone
High above the dawn is waiting
And my tears are falling rain
For the carnival is over
We may never meet again
Like a drum my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine
But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine
Now the harbour light is calling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
Like a drum my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine
But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine
Now the harbour light is calling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die
